v1: At the time of Christ, Christ will judge Israel by the holiness of the Son of Man. He will punish the lazy watchmen (leaders of Israel) who say that God won't do anything. [1]

v2. They will be made desolate, a probable reference to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 A.D. [2]

± Zep 1:12 And it shall come to pass at that time, [3] [that] I will search [4] Jerusalem [5] with candles [6], and punish the men that are settled [7] on their lees [8] [9]: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil. [{settled: Heb. curded, or, thickened }]

± Zep 1:13 Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit [them]; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof. [1]
