1. ‘Close read’ the text
A. Literal meaning of the text. This will be difficult since commentators will not agree.
Use a template of close reading questions to focus the attention of the student on details.
Understand there are no right answers in the literal.
2. Identify boundaries of the pericope
There is a beginning and end of the hidden pericope.
Look for transitional statements, changes of ideas, story, character …

3. Identify hints of prophetic riddle
It is all prophetic riddle. Hints draw you in.
Oddities, contradictions, uncharacteristic things, symbols, word-play.

4. Identify and discern symbols
