Pattern of Doctrine: The Desolate Woman
- Repetition of the Theme:
- Sarah (Genesis 11:30) was barren and could not have children.
- Rebekah (Genesis 25:21) was barren until Isaac prayed for her.
- Rachel (Genesis 29:31) was barren until God opened her womb.
- Hannah (1 Samuel 1:2, 10) was barren and cried out to the Lord.
- The barren woman rejoicing (Isaiah 54:1) is a prophetic picture.
- Clarification in Christ:
- The virgin birth of Christ (Matthew 1:23) clarifies that the barren woman represents human inability to produce life apart from God.
- Mary, though not barren, was unable to conceive by natural means, demonstrating that true life is a work of God’s Spirit.
- Personal Application / Doctrine:
- We are spiritually barren and cannot produce life on our own (John 3:6).
- We must be born of the Spirit (John 3:5-8).
- Apart from Christ, we can do nothing (John 15:5).
- God brings life where there was none, fulfilling His promise (Romans 4:17).
This pattern teaches that God alone gives true life, both physically and spiritually. Our salvation and fruitfulness depend entirely on His power, not human effort.
