Launch: Dealing with grief or loss
Launch: Dealing with Grief or Loss
Duration: 10–15 minutes
Goal: Equip learners with tools to navigate grief or loss through self-reflection and shared perspectives.
1. Opening Video/Media Clip (3–4 minutes)
Show a brief clip that introduces the concept of grief and healthy ways to process it.
Option: "Empathy: A Short Film About Embracing Grief" (available on YouTube, 2–3 minutes). This video illustrates how grief is universal, personal, and manageable with time and support. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw&t=29s
Setup: Before the video, say:
"Everyone experiences loss at some point in their lives. It could be losing a loved one, a pet, or even a dream. Let’s watch this short clip to explore how we might approach grief and what it teaches us."
2. Socratic Discussion (10–12 minutes)
Warm-Up Question (1–2 minutes)
- What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘grief’?
A/B Socratic Questions
A. Grief and Processing Emotions
- Is it better to express grief openly or to keep it to yourself? Why?
- Can grief ever lead to personal growth, or does it always feel like a setback?
B. Supporting Others in Grief
- What is more helpful for someone grieving: offering advice or simply being there?
- When someone says “everything happens for a reason,” does it help or hurt? Why?
3. Closing Reflection (1–2 minutes)
End the session with a reflective prompt:
"Grief can feel like a heavy weight, but it can also teach us about love, resilience, and compassion. If you could give someone one piece of advice about dealing with grief, what would it be?"
Encourage learners to write or draw their response on a sticky note to create a shared “Grief Wisdom Wall” for the group.
