Primary Definition (Core Essence)

The Primary Definition of a word refers to its fundamental, intrinsic meaning, which remains central across different contexts. This meaning is often tied to the word's foundational role in thematic, linguistic, and scriptural frameworks. It is the essence that underlies all secondary and extended meanings, acting as the root concept from which other meanings develop.

Characteristics of the Primary Definition:

  1. Intrinsic and Rooted – It is not context-dependent but serves as the foundational idea behind the word.
  2. Thematic Significance – Often reflects a core biblical truth or theological principle.
  3. Minimalist Meaning – Strips away metaphorical, idiomatic, or derived interpretations to reveal the most basic concept.
  4. Etymological Consistency – Can often be traced through word origins and ancient usages.

Example: Strong’s 01 – אב (Ab) = "Father"

  • Primary Definition: Giver of life, initiator, source.
  • Why? The word אב (Ab) is the simplest and most fundamental term for “father” in Hebrew. It carries the concept of origination, provision, and authority.
  • Scriptural Connection:
    • Genesis 1:1 – God as Creator (initiator of life).
    • Genesis 17:5 – Abraham as “father of many nations.”
    • Matthew 6:9 – “Our Father in heaven” (God as the source of all things).

By understanding the Primary Definition, we recognize the word’s thematic anchor, which remains intact across different contexts. In this case, all applications of "father" (biological, spiritual, national, or divine) stem from the core essence of initiation and life-giving.

This Core Essence serves as the starting point for all secondary interpretations, wordplays, and symbolic meanings, which expand upon—but do not replace—the Primary Definition.
