- Nicene Creed (AD 325, revised AD 381) – Affirms Christ’s eternal divinity and incarnation: "For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human." This supports the idea that Christ's incarnation was not temporary but an essential and enduring part of His identity.
- Chalcedonian Definition (AD 451) – Establishes Christ as fully God and fully man, without division or change: "One and the same Christ, Son, Lord, only begotten, to be acknowledged in two natures, inconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably." This upholds the permanence of Christ’s humanity even after His resurrection and ascension.
- Apostles’ Creed (Early Church, finalized AD 8th century) – Confesses Christ’s incarnation, death, resurrection, and ongoing presence: "He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty." This reflects the belief that Christ remains in His incarnate state as the exalted Son of Man.
Proposed Creed: The Permanence of Christ’s Incarnation
We believe and confess:
- The Word, who was with God and was God, became flesh and dwelt among us, uniting divinity and humanity forever. John 1:14; Philippians 2:6-7
- Taking on the form of a servant, Christ humbled Himself unto death, and this act of incarnation was not undone but remains an eternal reality. Philippians 2:8; Hebrews 2:14
- Having risen from the dead, He retained His glorified human body, as witnessed by His disciples, proving the permanence of His incarnation. Luke 24:39; John 20:27
- He ascended to the right hand of the Father as the Son of Man, our eternal High Priest, continually interceding for us. Hebrews 7:24-25; Acts 7:56
- As the glorified Son of Man, He will return in the same manner as He ascended, revealing the fullness of His kingdom. Acts 1:11; Revelation 1:13
- In Christ, the union of God and man is fulfilled, and in Him, we are united to God, sharing in His eternal life. Colossians 3:3-4; 1 John 3:2
- Just as a man leaves his father and mother to cleave to his bride, so Christ, having taken on flesh, has forever united Himself to His people. Ephesians 5:31-32; Revelation 21:2-3
To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen.
