Coronary Artery Disease | Amlodipine helps treat coronary artery disease (narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the heart), improving blood flow and reducing the risk of heart attack | |

Warnings:
- Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension): Amlodipine can cause a drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up quickly. Patients should monitor their blood pressure regularly.
- Heart Disease: Amlodipine should be used with caution in patients with severe heart disease or heart failure. It can sometimes worsen the condition if the dosage is too high.
- Liver Impairment: People with liver disease or impaired liver function may require dosage adjustments as the medication is processed in the liver.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Amlodipine should be used during pregnancy only if absolutely necessary, as it is classified as a category C drug by the FDA. It is unknown if it passes into breast milk, so caution is advised.
- Allergic Reactions: Rarely, individuals may experience allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these occur.
- Elderly Patients: Older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of amlodipine, particularly regarding blood pressure changes.
Active Compounds:
- Amlodipine: The active compound in the medication, amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that works by relaxing the blood vessels and reducing the workload on the heart. It helps in lowering blood pressure and preventing chest pain.
- Dihydropyridine Class: Amlodipine belongs to the dihydropyridine class of calcium channel blockers, which selectively affect the blood vessels and reduce vascular resistance.
Natural Sources:
Amlodipine is a synthetic medication, and there are no direct natural sources for it. However, there are some natural remedies and foods that can help support cardiovascular health in a manner similar to how amlodipine works:
- Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa): Known for its ability to help lower blood pressure by acting as a natural diuretic and relaxing blood vessels.
- Garlic (Allium sativum): Garlic is commonly used to lower blood pressure and improve overall heart health. It works by relaxing blood vessels and improving circulation.
- Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.): A plant used in traditional medicine for its heart-supporting properties, hawthorn is believed to improve circulation and reduce blood pressure.
- Beetroot (Beta vulgaris): Beetroot juice is known to have blood-pressure-lowering effects due to its high nitrate content, which helps relax and dilate blood vessels.
