Amlodipine

Alternate Names: Norvasc, Istin, Amlodipine Besylate

Chart of Uses:

Use Description Index
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) Amlodipine is primarily used to treat high blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily
Angina (Chest Pain) Amlodipine is used to prevent and treat angina (chest pain) by improving blood flow to the heart muscle, reducing the heart's workload
Coronary Artery Disease Amlodipine helps treat coronary artery disease (narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the heart), improving blood flow and reducing the risk of heart attack
Raynaud's Disease Amlodipine may be prescribed to treat Raynaud’s disease, a condition where blood flow to fingers and toes is restricted, causing them to turn white or blue

Warnings:

  1. Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension): Amlodipine can cause a drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up quickly. Patients should monitor their blood pressure regularly.
  2. Heart Disease: Amlodipine should be used with caution in patients with severe heart disease or heart failure. It can sometimes worsen the condition if the dosage is too high.
  3. Liver Impairment: People with liver disease or impaired liver function may require dosage adjustments as the medication is processed in the liver.
  4. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Amlodipine should be used during pregnancy only if absolutely necessary, as it is classified as a category C drug by the FDA. It is unknown if it passes into breast milk, so caution is advised.
  5. Allergic Reactions: Rarely, individuals may experience allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these occur.
  6. Elderly Patients: Older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of amlodipine, particularly regarding blood pressure changes.

Active Compounds:

  1. Amlodipine: The active compound in the medication, amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that works by relaxing the blood vessels and reducing the workload on the heart. It helps in lowering blood pressure and preventing chest pain.
  2. Dihydropyridine Class: Amlodipine belongs to the dihydropyridine class of calcium channel blockers, which selectively affect the blood vessels and reduce vascular resistance.

Natural Sources:

Amlodipine is a synthetic medication, and there are no direct natural sources for it. However, there are some natural remedies and foods that can help support cardiovascular health in a manner similar to how amlodipine works:

  1. Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa): Known for its ability to help lower blood pressure by acting as a natural diuretic and relaxing blood vessels.
  2. Garlic (Allium sativum): Garlic is commonly used to lower blood pressure and improve overall heart health. It works by relaxing blood vessels and improving circulation.
  3. Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.): A plant used in traditional medicine for its heart-supporting properties, hawthorn is believed to improve circulation and reduce blood pressure.
  4. Beetroot (Beta vulgaris): Beetroot juice is known to have blood-pressure-lowering effects due to its high nitrate content, which helps relax and dilate blood vessels.
