או (Self-Desire):

  1. Structure: Starts with א (divine initiative, creation, foundational speech) and is followed by ו (connection, purpose, or bringing things together).
  2. Flow of Meaning: או represents a desire rooted in the self, a longing that arises from one's own will or individual pursuit. It focuses on personal need or self-interest, reflecting the inward-directed yearning.
  3. Tone: This is a self-centered desire, driven by the individual’s internal needs or aspirations. It can be a healthy desire for growth but can also become self-serving.

וא (Desire for God):

  1. Structure: Begins with ו (connection, purpose, or the bringing together of elements) and is followed by א (divine speech, creation, foundational authority).
  2. Flow of Meaning: וא represents a desire that turns toward God, a longing for divine connection or fulfillment. It reflects a humble pursuit of God, acknowledging that the true fulfillment is found outside of oneself.
  3. Tone: This desire is other-centered, focusing on God and His revelation, aligning with a spiritual longing to connect with the divine and seek His purpose.

Nuance of Reversal:

  • או (Self-Desire): Represents a state of "I am", a desire centered around the self. This focuses on self-identity and personal goals, potentially independent of God's will.
  • וא (Desire for God): Represents "God is distinct", acknowledging that true desire should be directed toward God's nature and will, not self-serving interests. It recognizes the separation between human will and divine authority.

Practical Implication:

This pair highlights the tension between self-focused desire (או) and divinely-focused longing (וא). While self-desire can be necessary for personal growth, desire for God redirects the longing to something higher, acknowledging that ultimate fulfillment is found not in the self, but in God’s distinct nature.
