Discussion

The Hebrews believed they must accomplish works to please God. This is a subtle source of one side of Gnosticism. If the flesh is evil and the spirit good, some Gnostics thought they must perform works to redeem the flesh. The earliest contention concerned circumcision. [1]

  1. ± Ac 15:1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, [and said], Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
