Objective
Students will prepare for a hiking trip by understanding and gathering essential gear, learning navigation techniques, and practicing emergency preparedness. This challenge focuses on fostering independence, critical thinking, and readiness for outdoor adventures.
Challenge Overview
Students will:
- Learn about the "10 Essentials" for hiking and survival.
- Practice using tools like maps, compasses, GPS devices, and personal locator beacons (PLBs).
- Create a checklist of gear, pack it properly, and explain its importance.
- Role-play scenarios to test their navigation, problem-solving, and survival skills.
Materials Needed
- Navigation Tools:
- Maps
- Compasses
- Altimeters
- GPS devices
- Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) or satellite messengers
- Safety and Survival Gear:
- Headlamps with extra batteries
- Sunglasses, sun-protective clothing, and sunscreen
- First aid kits (including foot care supplies and insect repellent)
- Knives and small gear repair kits
- Fire-starting tools (matches, lighter, tinder, or stove)
- Emergency shelters (light bivy sacks or tarps)
- Food and Hydration Supplies:
- Non-perishable food items
- Water bottles and water treatment tools (filters, tablets)
- Clothing:
- Extra layers appropriate for varying weather conditions
- Additional Supplies:
- Backpack for carrying gear
- Whistle for emergency signaling
Challenge Instructions
Step 1: Learn About the "10 Essentials"
- Divide the class into small groups. Assign each group one or two items from the "10 Essentials" list to research.
- Groups will present their findings to the class, explaining:
- Why the item is essential for hiking and survival.
- How to use it effectively.
- Discuss how these items contribute to safety and preparedness during outdoor activities.
Step 2: Hands-On Practice
- Navigation Skills:
- Teach students how to read a topographic map, use a compass, and orient themselves.
- Practice finding specific locations on a map using coordinates and landmarks.
- Demonstrate how to use a GPS device and a PLB for emergency communication.
- First Aid Basics:
- Teach students how to treat common hiking injuries, such as blisters, cuts, or insect bites.
- Practice assembling a basic first aid kit tailored to hiking.
- Fire-Starting Techniques:
- Demonstrate how to start a fire using matches, a lighter, and tinder.
- Teach the importance of fire safety and Leave No Trace principles.
- Shelter Setup:
- Show students how to set up an emergency bivy sack or tarp shelter.
- Practice assembling the shelter in small teams.
- Packing a Backpack:
- Guide students on how to pack their gear efficiently, balancing weight and accessibility.
- Have students practice packing and unpacking their gear.
Step 3: Role-Play Scenarios
- Create realistic hiking scenarios, such as:
- Getting lost and needing to navigate back to safety.
- Encountering bad weather and setting up a shelter.
- Treating a teammate's blister or minor injury.
- In each scenario, students will use their gear and skills to solve the problem while emphasizing safety and teamwork.
Step 4: Field Test
- Organize a short, supervised hike where students will:
- Navigate using maps, compasses, and GPS devices.
- Practice using their gear in a real-world setting (e.g., setting up shelters, starting a fire, using sun protection).
- Respond to a simulated emergency situation.
- Ensure safety by having adult guides present and monitoring all activities closely.
