± 1Co 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

For most, the cross is a mere symbol of God's love for us, that while we were sinners, Christ died for us. Also "for God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son".

The cross is a metaphor for something much more.
