Group Study Guide: John’s Messianic Preaching
Scripture Passages:
- Mark 1:7-8
- Matthew 3:11-12
- Luke 3:15-18
- John 1:24-28
Opening Discussion:
- How do John the Baptist’s words shape our understanding of Jesus?
- What does it mean to be baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire?
Part 1: Observing the Passage
Read Mark 1:7-8, Matthew 3:11-12, Luke 3:15-18, and John 1:24-28 aloud.
Common Elements in All Four Accounts:
- John speaks of one coming after him – John’s message points forward to Jesus.
- Contrast between John’s baptism and Jesus’ baptism – John baptizes with water; Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit (all accounts) and fire (Matthew & Luke).
- John expresses his unworthiness – John declares that he is not even worthy to untie Jesus' sandal.
- Jesus brings judgment and separation – The winnowing fork imagery appears in Matthew and Luke.
Key Differences Between the Accounts:
Feature | Mark 1:7-8 | Matthew 3:11-12 | Luke 3:15-18 | John 1:24-28 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Main Message | Simple, Jesus’ superiority emphasized | Adds fire and winnowing fork judgment | Adds people's speculation about John as Messiah | No fire/judgment, focuses on Jesus' preexistence |
John’s Expression of Unworthiness | Not worthy to untie Jesus’ sandal | Same as Mark | Same as Mark | Same as Mark, but in response to religious leaders |
Baptism Description | Jesus baptizes with Spirit | Jesus baptizes with Spirit and fire | Jesus baptizes with Spirit and fire | Focuses on Jesus as preexistent, no mention of baptism |
Part 2: Understanding John’s Message
1. Jesus’ Baptism vs. John’s Baptism
- What is the difference between baptism in water and baptism in the Holy Spirit?
- How does fire symbolize both judgment and purification?
2. The Winnowing Fork and Judgment (Matthew & Luke)
- Read Matthew 3:12 and Luke 3:17. What does the image of the winnowing fork teach about Jesus’ role?
- How does this relate to Jesus’ separation of those who follow Him from those who reject Him?
3. John’s Humility and Our Response
- John declares himself unworthy in every account. How does this model true discipleship?
- How can we point others to Jesus as John did?
4. John’s Testimony in the Gospel of John
- Why does John’s Gospel focus on Jesus’ preexistence rather than His baptism?
- How does this shift in focus reflect later theological reflection on Christ?
Part 3: Applying the Message
- What does it mean for us today to be baptized with the Holy Spirit?
- How can we prepare the way for Christ in our own lives and communities?
- How do we balance John’s message of both warning (judgment) and hope (Spirit-filled transformation)?
Challenge for the Week:
- Reflect on an area of your life that needs refining—where do you need the Spirit’s fire to purify you?
- Share John’s message of repentance and hope with someone this week.
- Meditate on John’s humility and how you can live a life that points to Jesus.
Closing Prayer:
Thank God for sending Jesus to baptize us with the Holy Spirit and refine us like fire. Ask for a heart of humility like John’s and the courage to proclaim Christ boldly.
Memory Verse:
“He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” – Matthew 3:11
